Once upon a time there was a young girl named Arabella. She had shiny, black hair and dark eyes that were rimmed with luxuriously long lashes. Arabella lived with her family in a charming cottage in a small village near the My Princess Academy Castle.
Arabella was a happy girl who loved to play games with her friends, sing her favorite songs and play with her dolls. Most of all, Arabella loved animals. While she didn’t have any pets of her own, she would make friends with every animal she met—the squirrel that lived in the old oak tree in front of her cottage, the blue birds that built their nest outside her window or the pretty, white cat that sunbathed on their step. They all loved Arabella, and she loved them.
One thing made Arabella very sad. Just like many little girls, Arabella dreamed of becoming a princess. But she didn’t want to become her own kind of princess. Her only dream was to be a princess just like Princess Skylar. She wanted to have Princess Skylar’s flowing, blue hair, her beautiful, pale skin and her breathtaking Sequin Princess Dress. And Arabella dreamed of flying her own pink Pegasus, just like Princess Skylar’s.
Every morning before school, Arabella’s mother would find her daughter staring into the mirror, combing her long, black hair angrily.
“I hate my dark hair. It’s so ugly,” she would say. “Why wasn’t I born with Princess Skylar’s beautiful, blue hair?”
And every morning her mother would explain to her, “Beauty comes in many different sizes and colors, Arabella. Not every little girl was meant to look like Princess Skylar.”
Finally, her mother gave in to Arabella’s tears and bought her a pretty, blue wig. Immediately Arabella slid the wig on her head and ran to the mirror hopefully. Once again, her dark eyes filled with tears.
“Even with my new, blue hair, I still don’t look like Princess Skylar!” she cried.
As she lay in bed that night, Arabella wondered what she could she do to be more like Princess Skylar? She thought and thought.
“I need my own pink Pegasus. That beautiful, winged horse could take me on magnificent adventures!” Arabella decided. So Arabella came up with a plan.
“I will go through the forest directly to the stables of My Princess Academy. Surely Princess Skylar’s Pink Pegasus will be able to tell me where there are more beautiful flying horses just like her,” Arabella thought.
Early the next morning, before her family had risen from bed, Arabella tiptoed out the door of her family’s cottage and headed to the My Princess Academy Castle at the top of the hill.
She sang as she walked through the woods, following a comfortable trail. The day seemed bright and full of hope.
“Hello birds! Hello squirrels! I am on my way to My Princess Academy!” Arabella sang.
But after a little while, Arabella started to get hungry and a bit tired. She became distracted and wandered off the path. By the time she looked up and noticed she’d lost her way, she was far from anything that looked familiar. She continued on through the woods, not knowing where she was headed, feeling scared and very, very alone. She wished she had asked her mother to walk with her—or at least brought her cell phone.
Then, up ahead in a clearing, Arabella saw a pony. As she got closer, she saw that he was dark brown, shaggy and unkempt. His ears seemed a little too big for his head and his neck was much shorter and less elegant than the pink Pegasus’s. And he looked like he hadn’t eaten in days.
At that moment, Arabella spotted an old apple tree with only one apple left on its empty branches. She climbed up the tree and picked it. Though she could feel the hunger in her own stomach, she fed the apple to the little pony. He looked like he needed it even more than she.
“What’s your name little girl?” asked the shaggy pony.
“I am Arabella,” she replied.
“You are very kind. Why do you look so sad?” the pony inquired.
“I was headed to My Princess Academy in search of the Pink Pegasus. I need to find my own Pink Pegasus, just like Princess Skylar’s. But I have lost my way. Now I’m all alone in this thick forest. I don’t know how to get back home to my cottage, and I don’t know how to get to The Princess Academy,” she cried softly.
“There’s no reason to cry, Arabella. You have found me. And now it’s my turn to help you. I am your Pegasus,” replied the shaggy pony.
“How are you going to help me?” she asked. “You look as though you could use some help yourself. You look like a plain, old pony who hasn’t ever been cared for. You certainly don’t look elegant and sleek like a proper Pegasus.”
“Some day you will learn. Not every Pegasus comes in the same package, Arabella.”
With that, the brown pony bent down and Arabella climbed onto his shaggy back. He began trotting through the woods with a strong sense of determination. Soon he had found his way back to the walking path and began galloping confidently toward the My Princess Academy castle.
Arabella was so relieved, she could hardly speak. She had been more terrified than she realized. Finally Arabella arrived at My Princess Academy, the place she’d always dreamed of visiting. And she owed her safe arrival to the brave, little pony with the shaggy fur and big, awkward ears.
Dismounting carefully from the pony, she turned around to thank him for taking such good care of her. But when she glanced back at him, she was astonished. In place of the shaggy pony stood the most beautiful Pegasus she’d ever seen. He had a shiny, black coat and dark eyes rimmed with luxuriously, long lashes. And a set of graceful wings!
Arabella was amazed. What had happened to the shaggy pony?
“You look so surprised, Arabella,” said the Black Pegasus.
:”Are you the same shaggy pony that carried me through the woods?”
“I am indeed,” he replied. The difference is not so much in my appearance. It’s in how you see me. When you found me in the woods, all you wanted was a Pink Pegasus like Princess Skylar’s. You saw me as ugly—just a shaggy pony. But as I helped you find your way through the woods, you began to admire me. Now you see me quite differently.
You see, Arabella,” continued the Black Pegasus, “you will find that true beauty begins on the inside. When we are kind, caring and helpful, the beauty that is inside us shines through, and we become beautiful on the outside, too.
“I never thought any Pegasus could be more beautiful than Princess Skylar’s pink one. But you are,” Arabella exclaimed.
“You are so kind to animals and to your friends—you are beautiful, too Arabella. I hope someday you can see that,” finished the Black Pegasus.
Just then, Arabella caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window of the castle door. Once again, she was surprised. Though she didn’t have blue hair or the Pink Sequin Princess Dress, for the first time ever, she saw herself as beautiful.
At that moment, Princess Skylar emerged from the castle.
“Arabella, by recognizing the essence of true beauty, you have now achieved the first pillar on the path to becoming a real princess You now see that both you and the Black Pegasus are beautiful both inside and out. Because you have learned this valuable lesson, you are admitted to My Princess Academy as a Pixie Princess, and you will represent the virtue of Beauty,” said Princess Skylar. “Arabella, Pixie Princess of Beauty, you have earned the right to wear your own special princess outfit, the Empire Princess Dress.”
And so the new Pixie Princess Arabella, adorned in her beautiful, bright yellow dress, and her new friend, the Black Pegasus, entered My Princess Academy and began their life of adventure.
