Summer holiday was drawing to a close and Karima was excited.
Summer was her favorite time of year—filled with play dates, swim parties, and beach days—and her favorite perk, a later bedtime. But this year, summer’s end meant something special to Karima.
This had been the summer Karima was determined to become a princess. But unlike her friend Arabella, who had long, flowing hair, loved lip gloss and nail polish, and was a very girly kind of girl, Karima was more of a sporty kid. She enjoyed playing soccer, baseball, and basketball. She loved running through the woods, collecting rocks and befriending butterflies, and didn’t mind getting a little dirty doing so.
One day last June, Karima spotted the coolest princess outfit ever. It wasn’t as girly as the clothes Arabella liked. She was so excited to see that a princess could be sporty, just like her. She asked her mother if she could have it.
“I’m happy that you want to be your own type of princess, Karima. And I love the Sporty Princess Outfit,” her mother said. “But I think it’s important that you earn it.”
“How do I do that?” Karima asked. “I’m too young to get a job!”
“I have plenty of things you could help me with around the house this summer. And if you complete them all, I will give you the money for your outfit,” her mother said.
And so, when Karima’s friends stopped by to see if she could come swimming with them, sometimes she said yes, and other times she had to say she’d meet them later, because she was straightening her closet and making her bed. When they came by to play in the woods, she’d go with them, but had to head home early to set the table and help her mother with dinner.
Some days she felt a little sorry for herself. She’d peek out the window and see Arabella and Hanna heading to the ice cream store or playing on their bikes. But then she’d remind herself, she didn’t have to work so hard. She had a goal in mind.
One morning near the end of the summer, her mother placed some money beside Karima’s plate. “This is all the money you’ve earned over the last two months,” her mother smiled. “You’ve worked very hard and done an excellent job. I want you to have enough money to purchase the Sporty Princess Outfit—and a little extra to spend on something else,” her mom continued.
Karima was elated. She placed her breakfast dishes in the sink, grabbed her cell phone and her scooter, and headed out towards the Princess Academy Boutique, beside the Castle up on the hill.
She was a little way from the cottage where her family lived, when she ran into her friend Sophia. Sophia was a serious, self-confident girl who was usually on top of her game. But today was different. She looked flustered, and her eyes were red, as if she’d been crying.
“What’s wrong, Sophia?” Karima asked.
“It’s my tiara. It’s nowhere to be found. I worked so hard to earn it, and now it’s gone!” cried Sophia.
“Let me help you find it,” Karima offered. The two girls looked and looked, until there was no place else it could be.
Without thinking twice, Karima took the money her mother had given her and counted out the amount it would cost to buy a new tiara.
“Here Sophia. Take this and come with me to the Princess Academy Boutique. You can get a new tiara from Princess Skylar,” Karima offered.
“Thank you so much Karima,” smiled Sophia, through her tears. “You’re a great friend.”
Together, the two girls headed off to the Princess Academy Boutique. But, just before they entered the path in the woods leading there, they spotted a blue dragon, sitting beside a tree. As they got closer, they could see that he was a small, young dragon, with an injured wing.
Dragons could be dangerous, with their fiery breath and ornery nature. But this dragon looked more scared than scary.
“It looks as though you are injured, little Dragon,” said Karima. “How can we help you?”
“I have injured my wing and can’t fly home. I need dragon medicine,” the dragon sniffled.
Sophia didn’t trust dragons. But Karima was a girl with good instincts. She could tell the dragon was sincere and in trouble. “Where do we go to get this medicine?” she inquired.
“They sell it at the pharmacy. Most people don’t know about it—since it’s a special potion made only for dragons. But it is very expensive, and I don’t have any money,” the little dragon sobbed in despair.
“I have money that I earned this summer, and I can buy you the medicine you need, little Dragon,” declared Karima.
“But Karima, what about my tiara? And the Sporty Princess Outfit you worked all summer to earn?” whispered Sophia.
“I can earn more money. I really didn’t mind helping my mom around the house.” Karima casually shrugged her shoulders.
Suddenly, something incredible began to happen. Where the little blue dragon had been sitting, a giant, blue puff of smoke appeared, accompanied by an enchanting sound of tinkling bells.
Appearing before the girls was none other than the famous and beloved Princess Skylar, atop her impressive Pink Pegasus.
“Was that little dragon really you?” marveled Sophia.
“It was,” Skylar answered. “I have been searching far and wide for a Princess of Generosity. Many little girls are generous up to a point, but none have demonstrated as much selflessness as your friend Karima. After spending her whole summer working towards a goal, she was willing to share her money with you, Sophia. And she was willing to give it all up to help a creature she didn’t even know. That is the spirit of true generosity,” explained Princess Skylar.
“Karima, as the Princess of Generosity, you will receive two important gifts. First you will be adorned in the lovely Princess outfit that you desire. And you will be the bearer of the PrincessAcademy’s special Magic Wand. With this wand, you will be able to give generously to those in need.”
With that, her Pegasus took to the sky, carrying Princess Skylar back to the PrincessAcademyCastle.
Karima, Princess of Generosity, looked down and realized she was now wearing the outfit she had wished for all summer. And, she found in her hand the special magic wand of generosity. Karima was also happy to see that her friend, Sophia, was wearing a brand new crown of wisdom.
And so, Sophia, Princess of Intelligence, and Karima, the newly appointed Princess of Generosity, joined hands, and happily skipped home together, wondering what their next Princess adventure would be.
