It was a crisp, September evening and Sophia’s family was sitting around the dinner table. Sophia could see the wind blowing the tree limbs outside their kitchen window, and she felt cozy and warm at the bright table where her family was enjoying their full plates of spaghetti—her favorite meal.
Though she loved their lively, family dinners, as the youngest of three children, she sometimes wished she knew more about the subjects they discussed each night. Her older brother and sister tended to dominate the dinnertime discussion, talking with her parents about all kinds of things Sophia knew nothing about. As the baby of the family, sometimes she felt like she would never be as smart as the rest of them.
“Hey, Sophia! Why are you so quiet?” her sister teased.
“I’m just eating my dinner,” she replied.
Her mother knew that it was hard being the youngest child, so sometimes she would think of little ways to make Sophia feel special. “Sophia, honey, I have a surprise for you. You brought home such a great report card, so I bought something to congratulate you,” her mother said.
“A surprise? Wow. What is it?” Sophia asked, feeling excited.
“Open it and see,” her mother replied, handing her a beautifully wrapped package.
Sophia removed the shiny bow and ripped through the sparkly paper. She opened the oblong box and gasped when she saw what was inside. “It’s the tiara! My princess tiara! Thank you! Thank you!”
Feeling a little jealous, her sister asked, “What’s so great about it?”
“This is no ordinary tiara. When I place my new tiara on my head, it will provide me with all the wisdom of the ages,” Sophia replied regally.
“Wisdom—that’s ridiculous!” her brother joked.
“Just wait and see,” said Sophia, as she excused herself from the table to try on her tiara in front of her bedroom mirror.
From the very moment she placed the glimmering tiara on top of her head, Sophia began to feel smarter. That night, she went to sleep wearing her tiara and dreamed of reading all the books in the world and becoming a great professor.
The next morning, Sophia went outside to play with her friends Arabella and Karima, her new tiara placed firmly atop her head.
“I can’t believe you finally got your tiara. You’ve wanted it forever. It really is beautiful,” gushed Arabella.
“Do you feel any different when you wear it?” asked Karima.
“I do. I feel much, much smarter.” Sophia answered.
“Sophia, you are already the smartest girl in our class!” Arabella exclaimed.
“I may do well at school, but I’m not as smart as grown-ups,” Sophia explained. “But, now that I have my tiara, I shall gain the wisdom of the ages.”
Her friends weren’t sure they believed her. But soon they forgot about the tiara and started playing with a soccer ball, kicking it back and forth, until Karima kicked it too hard, causing the ball to roll into the forest.
All three girls took off after the ball. They chased it into the forest and began searching everywhere for it.
“Look, I see a hole over here. Maybe, the ball fell into it,” called Karima.
When Karima started to reach down into the deep hole, Sophia shrieked, “Stop! There’s probably a dangerous creature living in that hole.”
No sooner did Sophia’s words leave her mouth, then an angry green serpent with long, sharp teeth peeked his head out of his lair.
“Quick, everybody run!” screamed Sophia.
So, the girls ran away from the hole and the creature as fast as they could, stopping when they were out of danger and out of breath.
“Sophia, how could you possibly have known there was a dangerous serpent in that hole?” asked Arabella, mystified.
“Thanks to my new magical tiara, I know things I didn’t know before,” Sophia explained proudly.
All that excitement made the girls thirsty. They decided to walk to the store to get a drink. On the way, Arabella spotted a bush laden with yummy-looking berries.
“Look what I found—a blackberry bush! I’ve never seen wild blackberries in our forest,” said Arabella, as she picked a handful of berries and popped them into her mouth.
“Mmmm. I love blackberries, too.” said Karima, as she joined Arabella gathering and eating berries.
“Stop! Don’t eat those berries—There’s something wrong with them!” warned Sophia.
But it was too late. The girls had already swallowed some of the berries. Within seconds, Arabella and Karima had turned into statues.
Remembering she was wearing her tiara, Sophia didn’t panic. She thought quickly and put to use her new-found intelligence. She pieced together the mystery and came to the conclusion that the frightening serpent in the hole must have cast a spell on her friends.
Sophia went back to the creature’s lair and saw his head still peering out of the hole.
“Do you have something to do with what’s happened to my friends?” Sophia asked suspiciously. “I’ve never seen a blackberry bush in this forest before today.” Your friends ate my berries, so they received my curse,” the serpent sang out.
“Now follow my riddle or they will get worse: Their frozen status you wish to ease, requires the opposite, if you please,” advised the ugly, green creature before vanishing back into the ground.
Knowing she had to decode the serpent’s riddle to save her friends, Sophia thought carefully about what he had said. She even touched her tiara with both hands hoping for extra guidance. “The opposite? What’s the opposite of blackberries?” Sophia thought and thought. All of a sudden, it came to her. She raced back to where her friends stood frozen. Looking at the blackberry bush, and amongst its branches she discovered one single, ripe, white-colored berry.
Sophia ate the single white berry. With the blink of an eye, her friends had come back to life, laughing and chatting once again.
But, before Sophia could tell her companions what had happened, a bright bolt of blue lightning flashed, and Princess Skylar appeared beside her.
“Sophia, your intelligent actions show great promise. Today, you demonstrated how you could use your gift of wisdom to help your friends. You thought ahead and made clever connections” proclaimed Princess Skylar.
“In consideration of your thoughtful deeds, I bestow upon you the honorary title of, ‘Sophia, Princess of Intelligence.’ You must know you are a very intelligent and capable young lady even without your special tiara,” Princess Sklyar explained. “Your tiara is meant to remind you to act wisely and to always use your knowledge well.”
In order for others to recognize Sophia’s new princess status, Princess Skylar presented Sophia with the royal lavender Empire Princess dress. Bidding Sophia farewell for now, Princess Skylar vanished into a royal blue cloud.
Spinning around in her beautiful new Empire Princess dress and her prized tiara, Sophia was thrilled with her new title and her new responsibility.
“Don’t you think we’ve had enough adventures for one day?” Arabella asked.
“We better get back to our homes in time for dinner,” agreed Karima. “No more wild forest berries for me!”
Bursting into giggles, the three girls headed home.
